I’ve partnered with KEY Pledge Laundry Safety Campaign to bring you this post!
Liquid laundry detergent packets have become widely available over the past several years and millions of consumers have found these packets to be a easy and convenient way to get their laundry done efficiently and effectively, myself included. It’s so much easier to just toss a laundry pod into the washer vs. having to measure out powder or liquid detergent. There are no worries about messes, but with the laundry packets come with a big risk to our precious little ones.
As you may know, young children are continuing to be exposed to liquid laundry packets in the U.S. In fact, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, in 2015 there were over 12,954 exposures to liquid laundry packets in children 5 and younger. The brightly colored packaging is very appealing to kids and they are mistaking it for something they can eat. Since the laundry packets have a very high concentration of laundry detergent in them they’re very dangerous to kids. To help raise awareness on these accidental exposures, The American Cleaning Institute is educating parents and caregivers through its KEY Pledge campaign on the importance of practicing laundry safety at home. The campaign shares tips on preventing these types of accidents from occurring, specifically by keeping laundry packets up high and out of reach and sight of young children, and kept in its original container.
Some other safety tips include:
- Do not let children handle laundry packets
- Do not puncture or pull packets apart
- Store out of child’s sight and reach
- Keep the packet’s package closed and in a dry place
- Packets quickly dissolve upon contact with water, wet hands, or saliva so it is necessary to keep them dry
