Candy Graduation Caps

If you’re wondering what Candy graduation hats are, they’re candy paired together to look like graduation caps. It’s a fun way to add some edible decoration to a dessert table, or charcuterie board, or wrap them in cellophane as a party favor!

How do I store my candy graduation caps?

Store in an airtight container for 3 to 5 days. If you plan to make them ahead, it is best to refrigerate them. If the graduation party is going to be outdoors make sure the candy graduation hats are stored in the shade.

Can I make substitutions?

You can substitute Rolo’s or another truffle-type candy for the mini Reese’s cup. Just make sure it’s a sturdy candy that won’t crumble when you insert the cake pop stick.

You can substitute a chocolate-covered graham cracker or another square chocolate candy for the top of the hat in place of the Ghiradelli squares (or another Ghiradelli square flavor). Target has mini chocolate covered graham crackers that would be perfect.

You can change the color of the M&M and Licorice to match the color of graduation colors. Like using Rainbow Twizzlers. You should be able to find single colors of M&M’s and Licorice on Amazon, a Candy Store, or a Party store. You would also change the color of your glitter sprinkles and edible spray (if you wanted to).

  • Twizzler pull and peel, cherry
  • Yellow m&m’s
  • Edible Gold Spray
  • Gold glitter sprinkles

  • Mini peanut butter cups
  • Ghiradelli square

You will need the following supplies:

  • Wooden toothpicks
  • Craft or parchment paper
  • Small microwave-safe bowl

How to Make Candy Graduation Caps

Let’s make the tassel for our candy graduation caps! First, peel off a section of Twizzler and cut it into 2-inch sections. Take each segment and, towards the end, cut it into strips carefully to create a flowy tassel.

On a piece of craft or parchment paper, spray the Twizzler segments and yellow m&m’s with the edible gold spray. Allow to dry for about 30 seconds, and then sprinkle with gold glitter sprinkles and dry for an additional minute. Flip and repeat. Dry for an additional 5 minutes.

While the tassel is drying, let’s work on the candy graduation caps. Insert a cake pop stick into the center of the top of a mini Reese cup. Melt a square of chocolate almond bark to use as glue to secure the hat.

Once melted, dip the bottom of the Reese cup in the melted almond bark and attach it to the center of the Ghiradelli square. Place in a steady cup or jar to dry for 5 minutes.

Now it’s time to attach the tassel. Using the melted almond bark, attach the tassel and m&m to the top of the Ghiradelli square. Allow drying for another 5 minutes.

Once dry, serve and enjoy! They make the perfect addition to a graduation dessert charcuterie board.

Note: Be sure to allow the candy to dry before moving on to the next step so that your graduation cap stays together and remains stable.
